المغناطيس اكتشف الإنسان قديمًا نوعًا مميزًا من الحجارة السوداء تختلف عن أنواع الحجارة الأخرى المعروفة ، إذ كان بإمكان هذه الحجارة أن تجذب إليها قطع الحديد الصغيرة  . وكان العرب هم الذين أدخلوا البوصلة إلى أوربا في العصور الوسطى عن طريق إسبانيا ( الأندلس) وبذلك تمكن الأوربيون من تحقيق اكتشافاتهم الجغرافية والتجارية الكبرى خلال القرنين الخامس عشر والسادس عشر . ويستخدم المسلمون البوصلة هذه الأيام في تحديد اتجاه الكعبة المشرفة . وتصنع بعض الأدوات مثل مفك البراغي ممغنطًا ، فإذا سقط برغي صغير في مكان ضيق داخل جهاز كمبيوتر مثلاً ، لا تصله اليد بسهولة ، يكون في مقدرة الفني التقاطه بسهولة باستخدام مفك البراغي الممغنط . ولعل أكثر ما يثير الاستغراب والدهشة حول موضوع المغناطيسية هو أننا نعيش على سطح مغناطيس عملاق ، فللأرض قطبان مغناطيسيان تمامًا كالمغناطيس العادي أحدهما شمالي يقع في الجنوب الجغرافي للأرض وآخر جنوبي ويقع في الشمال الجغرافي للأرض .  قصة المغناطيس تروي الأساطير أن راعيًا اسمه ماغنس كان يرعى غنمه ، فلاحظ أن طرف عصاه المصنوع من مادة حديدية ينجذب نحو بعض الحجارة
