Letter to the IOM & Arab Spring overview from Yemen

Dear Prof. Sophia,

You are not bothering me at all. It is my duty toward my country to contribute by providing facts about Yemen. I wasn't there during the revolution of 2011 "Arab Spring" However, I was in Yemen when the war started on 26th of March 2015.

Religion played an essential role during the current war. For me, I am a person who did search for the truth instead of anything that I deal with, instead of blindly accepting religious beliefs. Nevertheless, many people I have seen became more religious during the first few months of the war, but after they adapted to the new situation they got back to their routine.

For my family, my mother wasn't okay with the war and she was complaining all the time. Therefore, we did manage to flee outside Yemen before Ramadan.

From my own point of view, Muslims these days are very far from true Islam. For instance, when a war happens, you can't just pray and ask God to stop the war, this obviously won't happen, because God wants us to do and pray instead of just praying. Hope will never stop the war. Other factors will (since these are not our topic I shall not mention them).

Religion plays a major role in Yemen, but after mixing religion with politics, people started to seek another way of salvation. Regarding women and the new female generation, they normally tend to get married to a person who can take them away from Yemen and settle down in another country besides Yemen and they don't really care if the person is a good guy or not, since he is able to settle down outside Yemen and had a job that can support a family that's fine. Some of the families have applied for asylum in Sweden and other European countries.

Let's say the war will end by next year although there is no evidence of that, but let's just assume that. I don't think things will be the same, especially regarding religion. People these days are scared to go to mosques especially the ones being managed by "Ansar Allah" because they are targeted by "ISIL". Nevertheless, these days the battle to free Taiz is ongoing which means that a lot of things going to change if the Saudi-led coalition succeeded in this battle.

You may wonder why Taiz is important? Well, because of their population which is approximately five million it has major effects on Yemen as a nation. Moreover, some people wish a WW3 start so they can make people feel how they suffer every single day, and some people in Sanaa hope that Iran or Russia would involve in this war to end it even by military action since peace talks are literally useless.

To sum up, when you live a single day in a war, you do appreciate the life that God had given to you. But, as a rule of thumb humans will never learn the lesson. In the end, this war may be a "good" thing for the Yemeni people despite all the damage that it caused.
Please do contact me if you want more details.

Yours Sincerely,

Medo Hamdani

Dear Sir/Madam,

On behalf of my sister who is currently holding a Yemeni passport with her two daughters who hold an American passport since their father is American. We were in the process to get the passport for my sister until the war started and most of the embassies in Yemen shut down their entire operations.

We did attempt to get out from Yemen by bus to the border during the truce, but the issue was before reaching the border, there was a Houthy checkpoint that forced (Raha) bus and a few other buses to change their direction back from where ever they came from. We did wait for more than 12 hours and tried again to go through, but at the same checkpoint, they didn't allow us to continue our trip without giving us any valid or obvious reasons to go back. Furthermore, they did threaten us by force and that they would use gunfire to attack the bus if we didn't comply with their orders.

The kids were terrified and they were no longer able to wait for another trial to go again. Therefore, the bus headed back to Sana'a but by that time the truce was over.

If you could guide us, and help us to seek a getaway from the current situation in Yemen, we will do whatever it is possible to ensure the safety of the mother and her kids. Moreover, we are ready to pay any amount for the air flight or accommodation.

Please do reply to us as soon as possible, since the situation in Yemen seems that it won't recover anytime soon.

Another email will be forwarded to you with the front copy of the passports.

Yours sincerely,

M.Taher
Laila's Brother
